Choosing the right material for any pitched roofing project, whether it’s a simple repair or a full build can be daunting. At Roofstores we pride ourselves on providing our customers with the best advice, support and the highest quality materials because we understand that your pitched roofing doesn’t just need to be functional and robust, it also needs to look great and stand the test of time.
CHOOSING YOUR PITCHED ROOFING MATERIAL
With the right choices, roofs can last a lifetime so it’s important to choose the tile that most suits your project or development contract. For instance, if you’re building an extension where windows or planning restrictions dictate the type of tile you can use, consider a low pitch roof tile. Alternatively, if you’re project is in a street of red clay roofs and you have your heart set on slate, you may need to reconsider your choices. While the finished look and feel is important, also consider things like structure of the building, its location and likely weather conditions to choose the perfect material for your build.
The good news is that Roofstores has the largest range of roof tiles and slates as well as every accessory you need to make your pitched roofing project a success. Check out our pitched roofing guides for more helpful advice from our team of roofing experts.

Slates are often considered to be the most aesthetically pleasing of the all the tile ranges. Often used in traditional settings, natural slates have clean lines, come in a wide variety of textures and colours and can last for generations. However, we’ve also worked with a wide variety of manufacturers to develop a range of man-made slates that provide the same look and feel but are more lightweight and easier to install. Check out our traditional SIGA range of natural slates, or Cembrit or Etex for a man made, lightweight version.
Undertile felt is a membrane that is laid underneath the roof batten that tiles and slate are fixed to and helps the removal of moisture from roofing areas and comes in breathable and non-breathable versions. Both completely resistant to rain and snow, a breathable membrane allows the moisture to escape through the roof enabling the building to breathe reducing condensation, whilst a non-breathable membrane prevents the moisture getting to battens and is often used in modern building where adequate ventilation is already in place.
